These examples are from a word work lesson I taught this fall. In this lesson I taught the students about the floss rule. The floss rule is used when there a word has one syllable, is a short vowel and ends in f,ls or z. In this lesson I assigned them to work in pairs and play the floss rule game. For the game students were asked to role the die, move around the board, land on a picture and name it. Then, the students use the recording sheet to decide if it is a floss word or not.

The instructional approach I used here was co-op learning. Working together helps students build confidence, build positive relationships and helps students gain information from peers rather than solely teachers.
